Matthew Sprange
Baritone
Matthew studied on the Opera Course at the Guildhall
School of Music and Drama having taken MMus and MMP
degrees at the school, studying with John Evans. He began
his vocal training with Wynford Evans whilst at Royal
Holloway, University of London.
He performed Schaunard (La Bohèm.e) for
British Youth Opera and roles including Sid (Albert
Herrin.g), Eustachio (Donizetti L’assedio di
Calais.), Mill (Rossini La Cambiale di
Matrimonio, and Le Baron (Massenet Chérubin)
at GSMD. Other roles include Comissario (La
Traviata.) and Le Chasseur (Guillame Tell) for Chelsea
Opera Group and the title role in The Marriage of Figaro
for Opera Brava.
Oratorio engagements include Handel’s Solomon at
Eton College with Dame Emma Kirkby, Haydn’s
Creation in St. George’s Chapel, Windsor Castle,
Handel’s Judas Maccabeus and Messiah,
Mozart’s Requiem. and Puccini’s Messa di
Gloria. in venues including Worcester and Southwark
Cathedrals and St. James’ Church, Piccadilly. His
solo Barbican debut was a performance of Tippett’s
Five Negro Spirituals. in a concert conducted by Bob
Chilcott and featuring the BBC Singers. .
As recitalist, Matthew performed two concerts at the
Henley Festival and Mahler’s Lieder eines fahrenden
Gesellen. at the City of London Festival. He performed at
Christchurch Spitalfields and the Ryedale Festival and
won second prize in the inaugural Chelsea Schubert
Festival Song Prize. He performed Barber’s Dover
Beach at the Barbican Centre with the Idomeneo Quartet.
Future plans include covering the role of Guiglielmo for
Welsh National Opera and performing the role of Prince
Yamadori in Mid Wales Opera’s production of Madama
Butterfly.
