2008-2009 Season Notes
Musical Director Alexander Chaplin writes:
"A very warm welcome to our 2008-09 season,
which gives us an opportunity to explore two of the greatest works
in the choral repertoire. This autumn we will be presenting
Mozart's magnificent Mass in C minor, and as a pre-curser
to Easter, we will perform Bach's St John Passion.
By placing Mozart and Bach side by side, we can recognise that the
two composers are key to music's continuous development through
the centuries. Our autumn concert falls on 22nd November, which is
also known as St Cecilia's Day; Cecilia is patron saint of music
and musicians.
Handel's Ode for St Cecilia's Day is an expansive
celebration of music through the poetry of John Dryden, which
culminates in a spectacular chorus: 'the dead shall live, the
living die, and music shall untune the sky'.
We trust that our music shall also reach the skies, and we look
forward very much to sharing it with you."
